Spotify has been one of the most popular music streaming platforms. With its massive library of local and international artists partnered with its lyrics feature, much loved by karaoke fans, it’s clear to see how Spotify has kept its users happy. But now, Spotify’s karaoke-style lyrics feature has disappeared, much to the frustration of fans of this service.
A statement from Musixmatch stated “From Friday, May 27th, Musixmatch is no longer available on Spotify desktop. It was a great partnership and there is mutual respect between both companies as our business strategies move us each in different directions. We regret the end of this partnership… we will not allow anybody to ignore our business model.”
Musixmatch was a button located on the desktop version of Spotify’s app, which allowed listeners the option to read the lyrics from the song. Giving the listener a chance to “start singing along”.
However, this feature has been removed and has instead been replaced by the greeting “Humming is Fun” – I’m unsure if that will go down too well with frustrated users that can no longer access the Musixmatch lyrics to their favourite songs.
A Spotify spokesperson stated the removal was due to an upcoming update, telling Music Business Weekly: “I can confirm our lyrics feature is currently unavailable as we’re making some big improvements to the feature. We’ll share more updates soon.”
This was later dismissed by Musixmatch in a later statement, and they have since released their own app available on iOS, Android, desktop and browser.
