CD Baby Set to revive Dormant Soundrop

In what has been considered a surprising twist in the music industry, CD Baby, the well-known digital distribution company, has taken over Show.co. This includes the marketing platform as well as its social listening and playlisting app, called Soundrop.

Short History of Soundrop

Once very popular, the app has been dormant since 2014, when its third-party app capacities were scrapped by Spotify. Prior to this, it acted as a powerful platform where users could vote, listen as well as interact about songs and music and powered listening rooms on screening services.

After this happened, the founders of the start-up focused on developing Show.co. It was basically an offshoot of Soundrop to enable musicians to promote and market both their music as well as their fans to music services and various social channels.

CD Baby Acquires Show.co

That is soon set to be history, however, with CD Baby set to revive Soundrop and make it an alternative distribution service that favours single-first strategies and constant creation. Soundrop will also act as a safe haven for numerous Loudr artists, which is another distribution service that CD Baby had acquired earlier this year.

In the meantime, Show.co will be used as a marketing instrument for the five thousand independent labels and artists who use the services of CD Baby.

Jørn Haanæs, the former CEO of Soundrop, said “Soundrop and Show.co were both about helping artists connect with their fans. To finally see the last part of our original vision take effect is wonderful.”

Entering into music distribution was always the dream, as that’s the ultimate fan connection, now it’s soon to be the reality.

“We are very happy to see a new home for Show.co and a new future for the Soundrop brand,” said Jørn Haanæs, Soundrop’s former CEO.

Kevin Breuner, VP of Marketing at CD Baby, added “We see this as another high-calibre way to serve musicians and give them the best of what’s out there.”

For existing Show.co customers, it will be business as usual.
